Special Weather Statement

Special Weather Statement issued November 15 at 5:45AM EST by NWS Burlington VT

The combination of prolonged dry weather, northerly winds up to 20 mph with locally higher gusts, relative humidity values between 25 and 35 percent, and dry fuels will contribute to an elevated risk of fire spread today for portions of eastern New York, including the western Champlain Valley. An emergency statewide burn ban is in effect until November 30th for New York. No burn permits will be issued at this time. Use extra caution if handling any potential ignition sources, such as machinery or matches, and ensure to properly extinguish or dispose cigarette butts.

* WHAT...Up to one half foot of inundation above ground level expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline. * WHERE...New York (Manhattan) and Southeast Suffolk Counties. * WHEN...Until 10 AM EST this morning. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline. Some roads and low lying properties including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront will experience minor flooding. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Localized minor flooding is possible during the Saturday morning high tide cycle.

* WHAT...Up to one foot of inundation above ground level expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline. * WHERE...Richmond (Staten Island), Kings (Brooklyn), Southern Queens and Southern Nassau Counties. * WHEN...Until 11 AM EST Saturday. * IMPACTS...Minor to locally moderate flooding in the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline. Some roads and low lying properties including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront will experience minor flooding. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Flooding is expected only during the morning high tide cycles today and Saturday. Additionally, locally moderate coastal flooding is expected this morning in Southern Nassau and Southern Queens, and possible once again Saturday morning. Minor flooding will be possible again during Sunday morning.

The combination of prolonged dry weather, northerly winds of 10 to 15 mph with locally higher gusts, relative humidity values between 20 and 40 percent and dry fuels will contribute to an elevated risk of fire spread today for portions of eastern New York, including the upper Hudson Valley, Lake George and Saratoga area, eastern Catskills, Capital District, Mid-Hudson Valley, and the Taconics. An emergency statewide burn ban is in effect until November 30th for New York. No burn permits will be issued at this time. Use extra caution if handling any potential ignition sources, such as machinery or matches, and ensure to properly extinguish or dispose cigarette butts.

* Affected Area...Portions of the Hudson Valley and Catskill FDRA, including the following counties: Schenectady, Albany, Rensselaer, Columbia, Greene, Ulster, Dutchess, Sullivan, northeast portions of Schoharie, eastern portions of Montgomery, and southeast portions of Delaware. * Timing...From 7 AM to 6 PM EST Saturday. * Winds...Northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. * Relative Humidity...As low as 20 to 30 percent. * Temperatures...Between 50 and 60 degrees. * Impacts...Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

There is an increased risk of fire spread on Friday with northwest winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 20 mph and minimum relative humidity values of 20 to 25 percent. This will lead will to increased fire spread if ignition occurs. New York state has declared a burn ban through November 30. Otherwise, burning is strongly discouraged. Use extra caution if handling any potential ignition sources, such as machinery or matches, and ensure to properly extinguish or dispose cigarette butts.
