Special Weather Statement

Special Weather Statement issued November 4 at 9:34AM EST by NWS Pittsburgh PA

Low relative humidity values resulting from exceptionally dry weather will impose an increased risk for fire spread this afternoon. Relative humidity values are expected to drop into the upper 30 to low 40 percent range during peak heating hours across eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. Southerly wind gusts to 15-20 mph at times are expected this afternoon. Exercise enhanced caution with activities that involve open flames or sparks as fires can easily spread in these weather conditions.

A combination of dry and windy conditions this afternoon will create an elevated risk of wildfire spread across northwestern Pennsylvania. Dry fuel moistures will be accompanied by wind gusts between 20 and 25 mph. Residents are urged to exercise caution if handling any potential ignition sources, such as machinery, cigarettes, or matches. If dry grasses and tree litter begin to burn, the fire will have the potential to spread rapidly. For more information about wildfire danger and wildfire prevention and education, please visit the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources website at http://dcnr.pa.gov/Communities/Wildfire.
